Yarnis and Eva emerge to take in the view... We communicate with them in a language that includes gestures....signs...some English words... Occasional English phrases... Some Italian words... More gestures... Nodding and head shaking.. He was a suit retailer in Rhodes... Italian suits... They live in Rhodos for winter be says.... A brother in Perth... 52 years he says... Left in 1942... As the Germans arrived... Coca cola in Perth he says... The Dodecanese Islands were under Italian control for 30 years leading up to 1942.. At least we understand the abundance and quality of the Italian food in Symi....Then the Germans for two years... Then the British for two years... Finally handed back to Greece....
The colours of the residential terraces surrounding the port start to change colour.. They lose their brilliance and soften... The penguins liken Symi Port to Mennagio on Lake Como... Take a photograph of life on Lake Como.... Increase the brightness... Reduce the contrast... Pretend it is a photograph of Symi Port..
The maritime caravans emerge dressed in their sailing best to rub shoulders with their fellow travellers... Time for the Penguin's to dine and to retire.
They rise late as their Symian excursion enters it's fifth day... time is slipping by.... Keep your eye on the task at hand... relax... relax at all costs....
The Penguins indeed keep their eye on the job.... Another gorgeous day.... London must have been impressed with them to have ordered such days...
They sit on their balcony and watch Charles and Marie wander past.... watch Ian Barnard wander past.... They squint their eyes and see familiar face after familiar face as the tourists and locals wander past... So many familiar faces.. Remove the squint and the familiar faces fade away.
Sit on the balcony longer than has been the norm... Enjoy... Wander... Watch the tourists emerge from the Sea Dreams... Choose a subject for the Symian "name the tourist" competition from their number... Discretely photograph the subject..
The competition is now open.... My entry.... Miss Brown Wiggly Bum... A note to readers follows... My sister in law Trudy has a name for the type of foot attire shown in the photograph of the subject above when worn in situation such as this... Readers are reminded that entries that in any way reference or relate to that name will be considered to be inappropriate and will be ruled ineligible....
Miss Wiggle Bum disappears into the crowd never to be seen again....
The Penguins start to believe they are locals... Wander into the super markets.. Rub shoulders with the bag carrier... Discuss the privations of winter on Symi with Symian shopkeepers... Understand the enthusiasm and long summer opening hours of the endured by the traders ... Make money now or you make no money at all.... Shop...
The penguins wonder what they look like to the maritime caravaners as the penguins look down upon them from their balcony... Photograph..
I am sure the landlubber caravaners would appreciate the home delivery service which as offered to their maritime peers in Symi ..
Take a picture of the National Bank of Greece.... Ready to serve 24 hours per day... I wonder what the German tourists think!
Lunch at 2:30 - photograph our friend the spruiker
Pay for lunch by climbing the stairs at the memorial..
Photograph a local ... A patient companion...
Rise from our siesta... Watch the mooring man land the Espresso... Just another Tupperware boat!... Marvel at the water colour... Blue... Blue.
